“In a scene crowded with singer-songwriters, it’s tough to make an impression, but Tye undoubtedly has the core talent to rise above the rest.” – SOUND GENERATION
“A real 24 carat find “- BIRMINGHAM POST
“A landmark achievement from a major talent.” – LUKE BROWN
BIRMINGHAM-based singer-songwriter Chris Tye launches his debut album, The Paper Grenade, with a special show at The Glee Club on Sunday 23 November 2014.
The Paper Grenade is a collection of truthful, sad, romantic and bruised songs, written and recorded over a period of three years, mixing bare acoustic guitar and vocal tracks with more ambitious string-filled arrangements.
“A lot of the time when I play, it’s paired down, just me and a guitar,” says Tye. “But I’ll also play with guitar and percussion and harmonies, right up to a full band, and I wanted The Paper Grenade to capture all that range. So the title track is just me; Weight of Expectation is a more mellow band; and Heart To The Ground is as big as I get!”
The album title comes from the idea that we should always do our best to evade the ordinary, and make an impact every day – something which a real paper grenade could not do.
“We should avoid non-days, avoid the mundane, and that’s a theme running through a lot of songs,” says Chris.
Highlights include Weight Of Expectation, Breakdown and Baby When I’m Down And Out.
Says Chris: “Weight of Expectation is about the nay sayers – there are a million reasons to talk yourself out of being a songwriter, but if you do it for the right reasons, there should be no stopping it; Breakdown looks at how we can become isolated in certain situations, even in crowds, and how, as we move on in life, how other generations look at us and think ‘they speak a different language…’; Baby When I’m Down is a love song, about making life better.”
The 11 track collection was recorded in Birmingham with co-producer Michael Clarke (Ron Sexsmith, Dan Whitehouse).
Chris’ debut EP/mini-album, Somewhere Down The Line, was released in 2006/7, followed by an EP, Matchbox Stand, in 2011. Performing what he describes as “urban folk music”, Chris cites Paul Simon, Grizzly Bear, The Beatles, Nick Drake and John Martyn as significant influences, and has previously supported such acts as Ben Howard, Teddy Thompson, Fionn Regan, Sharon Van Etten, Rae Morris and Amy Winehouse.
For The Glee Club show, Chris will be performing with a full band line-up augmented by cello and violin. Support comes from local singer-songwriter Vijay Kishore and a DJ set from Sam Redmore. Tickets 8pm available from 0871 472 0400 or www.glee.co.uk.
The Paper Grenade is officially released on Monday 24 November 2014 as a digital download (via all major platforms). CD copies available from live shows and www.christye.co.uk
