Expect the unexpected at The Glee’s brand new weekly comedy night.
There’s something very strange about to happen at Cardiff’s Glee Club …
Commencing Sunday 16 April 2017, The Gathering is a weekly comedy night like no other.
Hosted and booked by comedian Mark Olver, the regular new night promises a heady and unpredictable mix of stand-up, film, recurring characters, games, and mystery guests.
“The idea behind The Gathering is to create a comedy night that feels informal, like a party,” explains Olver. “I want it to be fluid. There’s not going to be a set format – like a compere and three acts doing 25mins. There will be very few rules: sometimes there’ll be loads of acts doing shorter spots … and sometimes it’ll be two headliners, doing their full shows.”
Among those lending a regular hand will be comedian Mat Ewins (whose … Make You A Star show won the Comedian’s Choice Best Show at Edinburgh 2016).
“Ewins will be doing video stuff and trying new material and new ideas,” says Olver, who alongside supporting such acts as Russell Howard and Lee Mack on national tours also does regular TV warm-ups for such series as 8 Out Of 10 Cats and Have I Got News For You. ” I also want some of the newer, up-and-coming Welsh acts to come and play, and try something different – be it character or topical … or anything they think will be fun.”
And the game element?
“Oh yes!” Olver responds enthusiastically. “I am a big fan of taking the most ridiculous concept possible and turning into a very serious game – I like Spelling Bees and finding out the most expensive item from a catalogue…”
Opening with the socially astute Athena Kugblenu and Twitter-friendly gag writer Adam Hess (16 Apr 2017), forthcoming shows will see appearances from the brutally honest Sean McCloughlin and Rosie Jones (16 Apr), and BBC Radio New Comedy Award winner 2015 Yuriko Katoni (30 Apr).
Others scheduled to appear include Lou Conran (7 May), Catherine Bohart, Sarah Keyworth and Spencer Jones (14 May), and Lloyd Langford and Scott Gibson (21 May).
There’s also several big name TV acts lined-up – but these ‘special’ and ‘mystery’ guests won’t be revealed until the night! But trust us … you won’t be disappointed.
The Gathering launches Sunday 16 April 2017 at The Glee Club, Cardiff Bay, Cardiff. Tickets £8 (adults)/ £5 (students). For more information, and bookings, see: www.glee.co.uk
