Clare Woods: Reality Dimmed

Clare Woods - Last Word (2017) (c) the artist

A new series of raw and powerful paintings by famed British artist opens at The Mead Gallery, Coventry.

An exhibition of new work by renowned British painter Clare Woods comes to Coventry’s Mead Gallery from Saturday 6 January to Saturday 10 March 2018.

Entitled Reality Dimmed, the exhibition features a series of raw and powerful paintings, frequently vast in scale, which have been inspired by found photographic images collected by the artist.

These images often depict people at their most vulnerable, including in situations of conflict and confinement. Reinterpreted in oil paint using long, curved brushstrokes and sensuous colour, Woods has created paintings which contain an intrinsic tension between reality and abstraction, beauty and its troubling undercurrent of ever-present danger.

Woods works quickly, loading her brushes with paint and applying it to aluminium panels in wide, arcing strokes. Parts of the image are obliterated with paint or stripped away; other sections – often those hidden in the background – are rendered in luminous tones to assume new importance.

Born in Southampton Clare Woods originally trained as a sculptor, and ideas of form and sculptural language underpin her paintings. Much of her previous work has been inspired by the landscape, but since 2011 her images have increasingly explored the human form.

Woods’ work is held in many major international collections including the University Of Warwick, Arts Council England Collection, the Arken Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, and the Albright-Knox Gallery in Buffalo, USA. Recent exhibitions include Pallant House Gallery in Chichester, Oriel Davies Gallery in Wales, National Museum of Wales, Buchmann Gallerie in Berlin, and a permanent public commission for the London 2012 Olympic Park. She currently lives and works in Herefordshire, on the Welsh border.
